Hannay, David. The Cyprus problem has defeated all attemps to resolve it for more than
forty years. From l996 onwards the UN , with strong support from the US. the UK and other
EU Members, mounted the most sustained of all the efforts to reach an agreement, so that a
re-united Cyprus could join the EU in m May 2004. Although it came closer to success than
any previous attempt, this one failed too. From his unique position as the former British
Special Representative for Cyprus David Hannay examines the underlying difficulty of
finding a basis which both sides could accept and the complex inter-relationships between
these negotiations and the applications to join the European Union of both Cyprus and
Turkey. Hannay concludes tht the Cyprus problem, for all its complexity and intractability
is not insoluble; and that Turkey's attempts at European Union memembership by definition
requires a Cyprus solution. This is the story of a very modern, multi-dimensional
negotiation which came close to success but in th end, as so many previous Cyprus
negotations has done, failed. In the process of telling,Lord Hannay has produced a
revealing, first-hand account of a profoundly complex situation which is an exceptional
reference tool for all those interested in the modern history of the region. hardback.

Peter LOIZOS. GRACE IN EXILE. Grace in Exile contains more than 100 photographs and an introductory essay, which together record the experience of the people of Argaki in Cyprus, who were made refugees following the invasion of the island in 1974. Peter Loizos' connection with Argaki is both academic and personal. His father was born in the village and many of his relatives lived there. From this unusual perspective, he has made the Argaki community a focus of his research during a wide-ranging career as a social anthropologist and documentary filmmaker. hardback. small format. 2003. published in cyprus. in Greek and English.
MARKIDES. Diana Weston. CYPRUS. 1957-63 From colonial conflict to constitutional crisis.
The key role of the municpal issue. Cyprus l957-1963 examines the issue of
separate municipalities, a microcosm of the Cyprus problem, during the process of
decolonization. The practical difficulties of the prescribed arrangemenets and the
pressure of intracommunual domestic policies, which were exacerbated by an injection of
cold war priorities and misleading diplomataic initiatives, ccontributed to the failure to
find a mutually acceptable formala.|A series of attempts to do so exposed the more
substantial power of the majority.. The failure to resolve the municipal issue was
therefore, bound to contain the seeds of the unravlling of the Zurich and London
Agreements by which Cyprus has gained its precarious independence. paperback 2002. modern

Brendan
O'Malley and Ian Craig: The Cyprus Conspiracy: America, Espionage and The Turkish
Invasion. ; CYPHIS CYPRUS 8v0 Cloth with D/J 1999. An enormous bestseller in the
U.K. -in no small part due to the fact that there are 160,000 Greek/Turkish Cypriots in
London alone - this book claims that the British Labour Government of 1970-74 tried to
stop the Turkish invasion of Cyprus (July 1974) and requested the assistance of the U.S.
sixth fleet, based in the Mediterranean, only for Henry Kissinger to veto the plan. No
suprise here then! Slightly slow but necessarily so as the background to the whole crisis
- which continues to this day - was highly complicated and this book goes some towards
explaining the situation. Absolutely essential reading for those wishing to learn about
why Cyprus is still a divided island to this day. S.J. N.B. Further reading would be

Stavros Panteli: Historical Dictionary of Cyprus ; CYPRUS 8vo; Hardback (no D/J; pp223. 1995. A very useful dictionary of personalities associated with the island of Cyprus since the earliest times. Not suprisingly 20th century pen-pictures comprise the majority of this book and with a useful chronology and a very thorough 'select' bibliography this book is a very handy reference aid. The price presumably is due to the short print-run, with the publisher's aiming mainly at libraries and institutions. S.J. Order this Book

PANTELI, Stavros. PLACE OF REFUGE. A HISTORY OF THE JEWS IN CYPRUS. In this unique and ground-breaking work, Dr Stavros Panteli surveys the history of the Jews in Cyprus over the past two-and-a-half thousand years. This highly readable and extensively researched account explores in detail this fascinating and previously untold story. Author Biography: Stavros Panteli is a Cypriot-born historian living in London. He has lectured and written extensively on Cyprus and the Greek world in general.
