Doren, David MacNeil Winds of Crete   Splendid travelogue written by an American who spent 6 years on the island of Crete with his Swedish wife, Inga. A few b/w illustrations at the rear.

Donat, John Crete:1960  A very nice large format paperback from the University of Crete (consequently cheaper on the island) of black and white photography by John Donat taken on Crete during his 3 month stay back in 1960. At the British launch the author was described as "another Pashley" which was a tad strong;, but while Mr Donat may be no Pashley his book is a very welcome addition to the market and some of the photographs within are amazing. Michael Herzfeld  The Poetics of Manhood- Contest and Identity in a Cretan Mountain Village.   Glendi, (a ficticious name for a real village, which is pretty easy to work out shoud you ever  visit it) is used for this superb anthropological case study by Indiana University Professor, Michael Herzfeld. A detailed, objective and compelling account of the villagers famed for their sustained resistance to Turkish Rule  and then to German occupation.' A wonderful book. S.J.

Michael Herzfeld  A Place in History A wonderful detailed book on all aspects of life in and around the Cretan city of Rethymnon, including such as aspects as vendettas. 

Sonia Greger Village on the Plateau
Superb anthropological look at the mountain village of Magoulas, one of 17 villages on the Lasithi plateau. A book written with both feeling and expertise and, while it may seem too specific, this is a case study that could so easily applied to other villages all over Greece. Anthropology .
