This site is rapidly become the general site to Crete. As well as all the usual useful  information - including a great message board - webmaster Yannis Samatas has now added pages on beaches, fishes, snorkelling etc and this site is going from strength-to-strength.

The home page of this site can be found by clicking on the link above. The site includes a message board and a chat-room, though its usefulness should be judged by going to the home page first, as this is an extremely thorough site. The home to my walking pages.

Sfakia.com This is probably the best site on anything geographicaly specific that I have seen on any area of Greece. Lovingly cared for by its webmaster, Erno.

These are some links to sites of specific Cretan interest; this is forever growing though if you look at Erno's links page, you'll find most sites that you require there: Erno's top1500    Yep, that's 1500 links on themes relevant to the island. Is there no stopping this man?

A great site to the west of Crete is Jean's West-Crete.com:

This site has been fully and superbly updated, as of December 2003, and I shall be writing book reviews for it, every couple of months or so.

Sites and Museums: I have dissected the following information during so that you can just nip into the museum or site, of your choice (or area)  within Crete. See them on the main Cretan page :Crete, in common with the Peloponnese, has archaeological remains, pretty much everywhere you tread. The sites at Knossos, Phaistos, Zakros, Archanes, Gournia, and Malia among others, along with the wonderful Herakleion museum, can all be found by accessing the Greek Ministry of Culture's magnificent site: Museums and Sites , though as I say they're listed within regions throughout our site'

An Excellent American-Cretan resource, based in Astoria, NY, with historic and current information can be found here:

  This is a wonderful site for all sorts of things, especially mantinades and other Cretan cultural works such as extracts from Kornaros' Eritokritos.

Expat Sites

Expats in Crete is an MSN group and is run by a chap named Scooby...or occasionally Dave.

One of those sites that I feel will go from strength to strength, is that of Hugh Beverton. Very informative - though in its embryonic stage - this has pages on "work", including such things as "labouring" and the best kind of options open, if you are planning to move to Crete;  a few useful"Greek Phrases" and a "discussion board". My kinda site! Watch this space, I shall be. SJ.

Animal welfare

This is a lovely site dedicated to the welfare of animals on Crete, with donation and sponsorship options alongside a message board (the English language version can be found here) and all kinds of other information on our more unfortunate four (hopefully) legged friends.

Well...Malia really! Good site, well thought through and includes all kinds of info such as the "Minoan" palace and is a rather nice site to the area in general. To be added to the Heraklion page soon.

"Not just another travel agency" say's the home page of this really nice site. Personally I haven't used them, but I am sure I will sometime in the near future. 

... and by customers...Sunvil Greece who fly to Chania and have accommodation mainly in the west of the island. A class act apparently. I'm checking them out next year.

On the island itself  in Gornes (Heraklion nomos),  you can find Zorba's Beach Apartments with pool bar here: Zorba's who rent out apartments for longer periods, up to a year at a very reasonable rate of between approx. £180-£290 per month, as well as on a normal basis. SJ

...or do you fancy living there? Well here is a link to a site that sells properties in Western Crete and having met the owner and seen him deal, in person, I feel that I can vouch for this innovative company based in Kolymbari. SJ
