Kazantzakes, Nikos (Kazantkis) Freedom and Death In my view this is not only Kazantzakis' best novel but also one of the finest novels ever to have come out of Greece. The book is set in the late 18th century against a background of unrest as the Ottoman Empire continues to hold onto Crete against the will of the vast majority of her people. The eponymous "hero" of the original Greek title ("Kapitan Michaelis") and his fellow "captains" are the bain of the Ottoman empire, refusing to wield to the threats of the Sultan or his Pashas and as the powers that be grow increasingly frustrated with them the scene is set for yet another Cretan uprising.
Captain Michael's relationship with his Turkish "blood-brother" Nuri Bey, is moving and there is a common belief that the character of Michaelis is based upon Kazantzakis' own father.
A superb novel, highly recommended.  (Not quite sure why the blurb on the back describes this as Kazantzakis Iliad, any ideas?) Stelios J
