Cretan Literature
Forgive me if this is the "Kazantzakis page" for the moment, other books will follow
David Holton David Holton: Literature and Society in Renaissance Crete A superb collection of 10 essays detailing the life and literature (including comedy, tragedy and romance) of Crete during the years of Venetian rule (1211-1669).

Kazantzakes, Nikos
(Kazantkis) Freedom and Death In my view this is
not only Kazantzakis' best novel but also one of the finest novels ever to have come out
of Greece. The book is set in the late 18th century against a background of unrest as the
Ottoman Empire continues to hold onto Crete against the will of the vast majority of her
people. The eponymous "hero" of the original Greek title ("Kapitan
Michaelis") and his fellow "captains" are the bain of the Ottoman empire,
refusing to wield to the threats of the Sultan or his Pashas and as the powers that be
grow increasingly frustrated with them the scene is set for yet another Cretan uprising.
Captain Michael's relationship with his Turkish "blood-brother" Nuri Bey, is
moving and there is a common belief that the character of Michaelis is based upon
Kazantzakis' own father.
A superb novel, highly recommended. (Not quite sure why the blurb on the
back describes this as Kazantzakis Iliad, any ideas?) Stelios J
