SAMARIA
A goat's gone crazy and is perched atop a tree
Driven mad by the sun in the Samaria gorge
We are walking on stones in a flowing river
Sheer sides above us and about us
Cracking branches and jokes
Wobbling on pebbles and peril
Winking and blinking
The sun slides through leaves
Bounces off tree and scree
It was chilly up there in the morning
But we have dropped several thousand feet
Our entrance to the entranced our own private gorge
Previously inhabited by fugitives from the heathen
Now inhabited by fugitives from mass tourism
God glances at the goat and throws sunbeams like droppings
Which we catch in our eyes grateful and hungry
Modern men marvelling at the beauty of basic.
