Alphabetical under author

A slightly cheaper alternative to the Stavropoulos English-Greek dictionary (see below) is the Collins one, though there is no Greek-English equivalent at present, though one is forthcoming in June 2003

Collins (Pub.): Collins English Greek Dictionary (MODERN) ; MGD A 925 page hardback dictionary, English-Greek only. An alternative to the Stavropoulos dictionary (and cheaper).

Collins Greek-English Dictionary The Greek-English to the above. Again. good value, but do Collins and Oxford believe that we Greeks are so weak we can't cope with a single volume desk-dictionary. A litle tip for them; we can!

The two Collins dictionaries are identical except their sizes. If your eyesight is excellent opt for the Collins Gem if not go for the Collins Pocket.  These dictionaries have the advantage of phontic transliterations.

Harry Hionides: Collins Pocket Greek Dictionary (MODERN) ; MGD Two way Modern Greek dictionary with most of the words those studying Modern Greek will require. An alternative is the Collins Gem which has the same words but smaller print and is three pounds cheaper  Out of Print

Harry Hionides: Collins Gem Greek Dictionary (MODERN) ; MGD Diddy version of the Collins Pocket dictionary. Same vocabulary, smaller text and much more 'pocketable'  

George Magazis : Standard Greek Dictionary (MODERN) ; MGD Two way Greek-English/ English-Greek hardback dictionary published by Efstathiades in Greece. If the title rings a bell this is the same dictionary as the one published by Langenscheidt. Nice size, single line definition with 861 pages + a list of regular verbs at rear. 

This dictionary is two way and very useful for those whose sight is not perfect as the print is very large.

The Greek publisher Sideris produce three Greek English/English Greek dictionaries:

Sideris (Pub.): English-Greek/Greek-English Dictionary: Pocket (MODERN) ; MGD 832 page two-way dictionary of Modern Greek. Clear print with, mostly, single line definitions.  

A larger alternative is also available:

Sideris (Pub.) Scientific Team: English Greek/Greek English Dictionary (MODERN) ; MGD A nice, clear hardback dictionary, with 1136 pages of single line definitions including some colloquialisms  

And an even larger one...

Sideris(Pub.): English -Greek/Greek-English Dictionary (MODERN) ; MGD Larger format ('BIG', hardback Sideris dictionary. Very clear print with 1342 pages. Also available in a smaller format.

A large and very thorough dictionary. Very useful if you require a single volume, cheaper and better than the  two Stavropoulos dictionaries, the English to Greek is far better as far as definitions are concerned than the Greek English part. This dictionary is best bought in Greece if you are going there as the postage to us alone is around about £7.00 but it still represents amazing value. Staphylidis also produce amazing Technical Dictionaries

Andreas Staphylidis: Hyper Lexicon: English-Greek/Greek-English (MODERN) ; MGD Large format dictionary with 1358 pages. The English-Greek part is more thorough on definition than the Greek-English part. This is the largest single volume Greek English/English Greek Dictionary available and is thoroughly up-to-date

These two dictionaries by the late D.N. Stavropoulos are the most popular and probably the best dictionaries on the market. with the possible exception of the one above (The Hyper Lexicon). Cribbed from the original "Oxford Learners dictionary" they have excellent definitions and the advantage over other dictionaries of putting the word into a sentence so that you can get an idea of context:

Tom Stone: Greek-English/English Greek Dictionary and Phrasebook (MODERN) ; MGD MGL Those of you who remember Tom Stone's 'Greek Handbook' will be delighted with this addition to the books for learning Modern Greek. The phrase book has phonetic characters only (no Greek) 

M. Vassiliou - Hippocrene (Pub.): Greek-English/English-Greek Dictionary MODERN ; MGD Reprint of the 1965 Vassiliou dictionary, hense multitonic and some might say out of date. This dictionary however will include a number of words which have become outmoded and is a useful addition to have in conjunction with another Modern Greek dictionary.

G. Babinioti: Lexiko tis Neas Ellinikis Glossas (Modern) ; MGD MGGD A very thorough (2064 pages) Modern Greek to Modern Greek dictionary. This (first)edition caused considerable controversy in Greece with some inclusions and more interestingly some omissions! With 150,000 words and phrases and 500,000 definitions.

A. Georgopapadakou: Orthographiko Lexiko tis Neoellinikis Glossas (MODERN) ; MGGD MGD 62,000 word orthographic dictionary, useful for looking up genders and derivation. Paperback  

Ilia Kambana: Erminevtiko Orthographiko Lexiko tis Dimotikis (Modern Greek - Modern Greek Dictionary ; MGGD MGD A pocket sized dictionary of the Modern Greek language pp764.  

Emm. Kriara: Neo Elliniko Lexiko (Modern) ; MGD MGGD A very thorough dictionary of the Greek language from Modern Greek to Modern Greek with 1572 pages.

Manoli Triandaphillidi: Lexicon tis Koinis Neoellinikis (Dictionary of Koini-Modern Greek) ; MGGD MGD BYZ THEOL NT A comprehensive dictionary of the Modern Greek language into Modern Greek. Very large format pp1531. 

Tegopulos-Fytrakis: Meizon Elliniko Lexiko ; MGGD MGD Another thorough Modern Greek to Modern Greek dictionary with 1494 pages including glossaries and a CD ROM.
