Birds

Birds of Prey of Greece

Birds of Prey of Greece by Handrinos (£8.95). A very nicely illustrated paperback of our feathered friends

Fish:

Coastal Fishes of Greece

Coastal Fishes of Greece by Batjakas and Economakis (£6.95). A small book (128 pages inc. index) and not particularly thorough. However, there is very little else on the subject, the book has colour photographs with b/w line drawings of the fish throughout and is relatively good value, but do not expect to be overwhelmed.

Flowers:

Flowers of Greece by George Sfikas (£5.50) Sfikas is an expert botanist, but he is sadly let down in this awful book which is tiny. It has interlinear text in eight different languages opposite a blurred colour photo of the flower, which make my gifs look clear by comparison. No contents, no index. No picture; it doesn't deserve one. SJ

'Flowers of Crete'

Flowers of Crete; Turland et al. This is not only a fabulous book, it's a veritable tribute to the wonderful world that is Crete's annual floral riot. Superbly taken photos and authoratative text make this the bible for all those interested in the flowers of Crete. It's amazingly cheap too. Honest it is. £47.00 may not, on the face of it, seem cheap, but I would not have been surprised if this book had come out at 5 times this price. Furthermore, before Christmas, quote "Stelios Jackson" in the "message" box - provided on our secure server, and we'll send it for £3.00 (ordinary cost £8.00). For foreign orders (and for those willing to brave the harsh climate of London NW5, by entertaing the outrageous idea of coming into the shop!), the cost of the book is reduced to £43.00, but the postage will be massive! In any of the cases, above, please quote "Stelios Jackson", as a reference.Ladies and Gentlemen, I thank you!

Sfikas Wild Flowers of Crete

Wild Flowers of Crete by George Sfikas. 310 pages inc index of flowers found in Crete some of which are endemic, but it's worth having here too as a lot of the contents can be found in other areas of Greece too.

Making a Garden on a Greek Hillside

Making a Garden on a Greek Hillside by Mary Jaqueline Tyrwhitt. 247 pages inc index, demy 8vo with many line drawings. The author believed that anything that would grow in a Mediterannean climate would "...be almost certain to grow anywhere better"..., so she created her own garden on an Attic hillside. An eminently readable book that takes the reader through the months in a botanical calendar, but is far more interesting than that as it is almost a diary of other events during a year in Greece too, with some fascinating information. for the those with and without green fingers. £12.00
